ABSTRACT

Abstract This study provides an updated list of parasite species and their respective hosts in the upper Paraná River floodplain. The list of parasites is structured by phylum, class, order and family, followed by a record of each host species. A total of 315 taxa of parasites were reported, of which 201 were identified at the species level. These 201 species comprise 3 Flagellata, 3 Myxozoa, 50 Monogenea, 43 Digenea, 40 Cestoda, 41 Nematoda, 8 Acanthocephala, 6 Copepoda, 5 Branchiura and 2 Pentastomida, arranged in 84 host fish species. This work carried out in the floodplain of the upper Paraná River contributes to the listing of parasite species and host interactions of the local ichthyofauna. Little is known about these communities and its riches are underestimated due to the high density of fish found in this region, highlighting the importance of conducting studies on the local fauna.


Resumo Este estudo fornece uma lista atualizada de espécies de parasitos e seus respectivos hospedeiros da planície de inundação do alto rio Paraná. A lista de parasitos está estruturada em filo, classe, ordem e família, seguida do registro de cada espécie de hospedeiro. São relatados 315 táxons de parasitos e, destes, 201 foram identificados por espécie. Essas 201 espécies compreendem: 3 Flagellata, 3 Myxozoa, 50 Monogenea, 43 Digenea, 40 Cestoda, 41 Nematoda, 8 Acanthocephala, 6 Copepoda, 5 Branchiura e 2 Pentastomida, distribuídos em 84 espécies de hospedeiros. Este trabalho, realizado na planície de inundação do alto rio Paraná, contribui para a listagem de espécies de parasitos e interações parasito-hospedeiro da ictiofauna local. Pouco dessas comunidades é conhecida, e suas riquezas são subestimadas devido à alta densidade de peixes encontrados nessa região, destacando-se a importância da realização de estudos sobre a fauna local.

ABSTRACT

The human species has an emotional connection with nature called "biophilia" (or, love for life). This connection goes from generation to generation, being one of the reasons why green spaces are present in large cities. Quinta da Boa Vista is a municipal park in Rio de Janeiro located in the São Cristóvão neighborhood in the northern part of the city. Its main attraction is the artificial lake system, a leisure attraction for the local community. This article reports the presence of Biomphalaria glabrata and Physa acuta snails around the main lake in the Quinta da Boa Vista Municipal Park in Rio de Janeiro, RJ. Seventy-one B. glabrata and twenty-seven P. acuta snails were collected. The snails were measured and examined for the presence of trematode larvae according to standardized procedures. The prevalence rate of B. glabrata was estimated at 15.5%. Rediae and cercariae resembling those of the species Typhlocoelum cucumerinum (Typhlocoelidae, Digenea) which parasitizes aquatic birds of the order Anseriformes were found. This study reinforces the importance of monitoring park lakes and ponds to better understand the risk of helminth transmission by molluscan vectors.

Abstract Birds act as hosts for a variety of parasites, many of these are unreported. The literature provides scant information on the helminth fauna of Phimosus infuscatus. The presence of helminths were investigate in 28 birds from Pelotas, Capão do Leão, and Rio Grande in Rio Grande do Sul. The preparation and identification of helminths followed protocols. Prevalence (P%), mean intensity of infection (MII), and mean abundance (MA) were estimated. The following helminths were found: Hystrichis acanthocephalicus , Dioctophyme renale (larva), Porrocaecum heteropterum , Baruscapillaria sp., Aproctella carinii , Paradeletrocephalus minor, and Cyathostoma sp. (Nematoda); Echinostomatidae gen. sp., Tanaisia valida, and Athesmia sp. (Trematoda: Digenea) and Megalacanthus sp. (Cestoda). The most prevalent species were H. acanthocephalicus, P. heteropterum, Megalacanthus sp., and Echinostomatidae gen. sp. and Megalacanthus sp. had the highest MII and MA. There was a significant difference in the prevalence of H. acantocephalicus between female and male bird hosts. We report Echinostomatidae gen. sp., T. valida, Athesmia sp., Cyathostoma sp., A. carinii, P. minor, D. renale (larva), Baruscapillaria sp., and Megalacanthus sp. for the first time in P. infuscatus in Brazil.


Resumo As aves atuam como hospedeiros para uma ampla variedade de parasitos, muitos destes ainda desconhecidos. Foram examinadas 28 aves, provenientes dos municípios de Pelotas, Capão do Leão e Rio Grande. A coleta, preparação e identificação dos helmintos seguiu bibliografia específica. A assembleia de helmintos foi analisada através dos índices de prevalência (P%), intensidade média de infecção (IMI) e abundância (AM). A assembleia de helmintos de P. infuscatus estava composta por Nematoda: Hystrichis acanthocephalicus , Dioctophyme renale (larva), Porrocaecum heteropterum , Baruscapillaria sp., Aproctella carinii , Paradeletrocephalus minor, Cyathostoma sp.; Digenea: Echinostomatidae gen. sp., Tanaisia valida, Athesmia sp. e Megalacanthus sp. (Cestoda). As espécies mais prevalentes foram: H. acanthocephalicus, P. heteropterum , Megalacanthus sp. e Echinostomatidae gen. sp. A maior IMI e AM foi de Megalacanthus sp., onde observou-se diferença significativa na prevalência de H. acantocephalicus em hospedeiros fêmeas. Os helmintos Echinostomatidae gen. sp., T. valida, Athesmia sp., Cyathostoma sp., A. carinii, P. minor, D. renale (larva), Baruscapillaria sp., e Megalacanthus sp. são registrados pela primeira vez em P. infuscatus no Brasil.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this paper was to report the occurrence of Austrodiplostomum spp. in the eyes and brain of Acaronia nassa, Caquetaia spectabilis, Satanoperca acuticeps, Curimatella sp. and Crenicichla marmorata in a lake of the Amazon River system in the state of Pará (Brazil). Of 49 fish examined, 10.2% were parasitized by Austrodiplostomum spp. metacercariae, and A. nassa was the host with higher number of metacercariae. In five examined fish species, a total of 51 metacercariae were collected, with 45 found in the eyes and 6 in the cranial vault. In the eyes, the metacercariae were free and active in the vitreous humor, but no opacification was observed. In the brain, the metacercariae were also free and active, and located mainly below the encephalon, on the cranial floor, at the height of the ophthalmic lobes and near the optic nerve. In laboratory observations, however, the infected fish did not exhibit any behavioral disorders, and this may be related to the low level of parasitism. This was the first report of this digenean for C. spectabilis, S. acuticeps, Curimatella sp., C. marmorata and A. nassa.(AU)


O objetivo deste trabalho foi relatar a ocorrência de Austrodiplostomum spp. nos olhos e cérebros de Acaronia nassa, Caquetaia spectabilis, Satanoperca acuticeps, Curimatella sp. e Crenicichla marmorata em um lago do rio Amazonas no estado do Pará (Brasil). Dos 49 peixes examinados, 10,2% foram parasitados por metacercárias de Austrodiplostomum spp., A. nassa sendo o hospedeiro com maior número de metacercárias. Em cinco espécies de peixes examinadas, foram coletadas 51 metacercárias, sendo 45 encontradas nos olhos e 6 na caixa craniana. Nos olhos, as metacercárias estavam livres e ativas no humor vítreo, mas nenhuma opacificação foi observada. No cérebro, as metacercárias também eram livres e ativas, localizadas principalmente abaixo do encéfalo, no assoalho do crânio, na altura dos lobos oftálmicos e próximo ao nervo óptico. Em observações laboratoriais, no entanto, o peixe infectado não apresentou distúrbios comportamentais, o que pode estar relacionado ao baixo nível de parasitismo. Este foi o primeiro relato de Austrodiplostomum spp. em C. spectabilis, S. acuticeps, Curimatella sp., C. marmorata e A. nassa.(AU)

ABSTRACT In the Amazon, the growing demand for fish has been boosting the expansion of fish farms. However, the intensification of cultivation can generate disequilibrium in the parasite-host environment, predisposing fish to parasitic infections. The objective of this study was to evaluate the community structure of metazoan parasites in cultivation systems of piauçu, Leporinus macrocephalus, in the state of Acre, Brazil. We examined 100 specimens from a semi-intensive cultivation system (earth tanks) and 100 from an extensive system (dams). Overall 66.5% of the hosts were parasitized. We collected 1,240 parasite specimens, classified in 15 metazoan taxa (10 monogenoidean, one digenean and four nematodes). The parasite prevalence was higher by Monogenoidea in the dams, and by Nematoda in the earth tanks. The parasitic indexes were, in general, low and varied among species. Monogeneoidea had higher values for quantitative and ecological descriptors of parasitism in the dams, while Nematoda had higher values in the earth tanks. A single species of Digenea was found in the dams, with low prevalence. No taxon was classified as central. In the dams, parasite abundance was correlated only with total fish length, while in the earth tanks, it was positively correlated with total length, weight and condition factor of fish. The endoparasite and ectoparasite infracommunities presented higher richness, dominance, diversity and evenness, respectively, in the earth tanks and in the dams. This is the first study of ecological descriptors of parasites of L. macrocephalus in the Amazon.


RESUMO Na Amazônia, a crescente demanda por pescado vem impulsionando a expansão da piscicultura. No entanto, a intensificação dos cultivos pode gerar desequilíbrio no sistema parasito-hospedeiro-ambiente, predispondo os peixes a infecções parasitárias. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a estrutura das comunidades de metazoários parasitos de piauçu, Leporinus macrocephalus, em sistemas de cultivo no estado do Acre, Brasil. Foram coletados 200 peixes, sendo 100 espécimes de sistema de cultivo semi-intensivo em viveiro escavado e 100 de sistema extensivo em açude. Dos 200 hospedeiros analisados 66,5% estavam parasitados. Foram coletados 1.240 espécimes de metazoários, classificados em quinze espécies (10 de Monogenoidea, uma de Digenea e quatro de Nematoda). A prevalência de parasitismo por Monogenoidea foi maior em açude e por Nematoda em viveiro. De forma geral, os índices de parasitismo foram baixos e variaram entre as espécies, com maiores valores dos descritores quantitativos e ecológicos do parasitismo por Monogenoidea em açude e Nematoda em viveiro. ABSTRACT

Abstract This study presents the helminthofauna of digenean parasites of Acestrorhynchus falcirostris in the state of Amazonas (Brazil). Eight species belonging to four families were recovered: Metacercariae of Austrodiplostomum compactum (Diplostomidae) and Clinostomum marginatum (Clinostomidae) and mature specimens of Bellumcorpus majus, Prosorhynchoides carvajali, Rhipidocotyle santanaensis (Bucephalidae); Prosthenhystera obesa (Callodistomidae); Genarchella genarchella (Derogenidae) and Phyllodistomum spatula (Gorgoderidae). Examining specimens belonging to the genus Bellumcorpus collected from A. falcirostris, were observed a great variation in the size and shape of testes, which also could be observed in the type specimens of Bellumcorpus majus and B. schubarti. Considering the similar morphology and morphometric characteristics of both species, in this paper B. schubarti is considered synonym of B. majus. Acestrorhynchus falcirostris is a new host records for all these species of digenean, except to A. compactum and C. marginatum. Prosorhynchoides carvajali is referred for the first time in Brazil.


Resumo Esse estudo apresenta a fauna helmintológica de Digenea parasitos de Acestrorhynchus falcirostris no estado do Amazonas. Oito espécies pertencentes a quatro famílias foram estudadas: Metacercarias de Austrodiplostomum compactum (Diplostomidae) e Clinostomum marginatum (Clinostomidae) e espécimes adultos de Bellumcorpus majus, Prosorhynchoides carvajali, Rhipidocotyle santanaensis (Bucephalidae); Prosthenhystera obesa (Callodistomidae); Genarchella genarchella (Derogenidae) e Phyllodistomum spatula (Gorgoderidae). Examinando espécimes pertencentes ao gênero Bellumcorpus coletados de A. falcirostris, foi observada uma grande variação no tamanho e forma dos testículos, que também pode ser observada nos espécimes tipo de Bellumcorpus majus e B. schubarti. Considerando a morfologia e características morfométricas similares de ambas as espécies, neste artigo, B. schubarti é considerado sinônimo de B. majus. Acestrorhynchus falcirostris representa um novo hospedeiro para todas essas espécies de Digenea, exceto para A. compactum e C. marginatum. Prosorhynchoides carvajali é referido pela primeira vez no Brasil.

ABSTRACT This study investigated the metazoan parasite fauna in Peckoltia braueri and Pterygoplichthys pardalis from a tributary of the Amazon River system, in northern Brazil. In P. braueri, 630 parasites were collected, belonging to Unilatus unilatus, Nothogyrodactylus sp., Genarchella genarchella, Proteocephalus sp., Gorytocephalus elongorchis, Dolops longicauda and Hirudinea gen. sp., with a dominance of monogenean species. In P. pardalis, 120 parasites were collected, belonging to U. unilatus, Acanthostomum gnerii and Gorytocephalus elongorchis, and this acanthocephalan was the dominant species. In both hosts, the parasites presented clumped distribution, high prevalence, low abundance, low Shannon diversity, and low species richness, with a predominance of helminth species. In P. braueri, host length was positively correlated with parasite species richness and Shannon index. There was no difference in the body condition of parasitized and non-parasitized fishes in either host. This was the first report of these parasites in P. braueri and P. pardalis.


RESUMO Este estudo investigou a fauna de parasitos metazoários em Peckoltia braueri e Pterygoplichthys pardalis de um tributário do sistema do Rio Amazonas, no Amapá, norte do Brasil. Em P. braueri foram coletados 630 parasitos das espécies Unilatus unilatus, Nothogyrodactylus sp., Genarchella genarchella, Proteocephalus sp., Gorytocephalus elongorchis, Dolops longicauda e Hirudinea gen. sp., com dominância das espécies de monogenoideas. Em P. pardalis foram coletados 120 parasitos das espécies U. unilatus, Acanthostomum gnerii e Gorytocephalus elongorchis, sendo este acantocéfalo a espécie dominante. Os parasitos em ambos hospedeiros apresentaram dispersão agregada, elevada prevalência, baixa abundância, baixa diversidade de Shannon e baixa riqueza de espécies, com predominância de espécies de helmintos. Em P. braueri, o comprimento dos hospedeiros apresentou correlação positiva com a riqueza de espécies de parasitos e o índice de Shannon. Não houve diferença entre a condição corporal de peixes parasitados e não parasitados para os dois hospedeiros. Este foi o primeiro relato desses parasitos para P. braueri e P. pardalis.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Austrodiplostomum compactum is a digenetic trematode whith metacercariae that occur in the eyes of a wide variety of fish species. In Brazil, A. compactum metacercariae have been reported in many fish species, but there are only a few studies in the Amazon region. Due to the lack of information in the Amazon, the aim of this study was to report the occurrence of A. compactum metacercariae in the eyes of 15 specimens of Plagioscion squamosissimus from the Lake Catalão, in Amazonas, Brazil. Fishes were collected using gill nets placed randomly in the lake, euthanized in a field laboratory, and had their eyes dissected and examined under a stereomicroscope. A total of 801 metacercariae were registered infecting the eyes of the hosts with a parasitic prevalence of 100%. There was a significant positive correlation between the number of metacercariae recorded and the standard body length of fishes. No significant correlation was found between the number of metacercariae and the weight and relative condition factor (Kn) of the hosts. Values of the variance-to-mean ratio and Green's index suggested an aggregate distribution of the parasites in the hosts, with a low degree of aggregation. This is the first report of occurrence of A. compactum parasitizing a fish in the Lake Catalão.


RESUMO Austrodiplostomum compactum é um trematódeo digenético cuja metacercária ocorre nos olhos de uma grande variedade de espécies de peixes. No Brasil, metacercárias deste parasita foram relatadas em diversas espécies de peixes, mas existem poucos estudos na região amazônica. Devido à falta de informação na região amazônica, o objetivo deste estudo foi relatar a ocorrência de metacercárias de A. compactum nos olhos de 15 espécimes de Plagioscion squamosissimus provenientes do Lago Catalão, Amazonas, Brasil. Os peixes foram coletados usando redes de pesca distribuídas aleatoriamente no lago e sacrificados em laboratório de campo, onde os olhos foram removidos e examinados sob microscópio estereoscópico. Um total de 801 metacercárias foram registradas infectando os olhos do hospedeiro, com uma prevalência parasitária de 100%. Houve uma correlação positiva significativa entre o número de metacercárias e o comprimento padrão dos peixes. Nenhuma correlação significativa entre o número de metacercárias e o peso e o fator de condição relativa (Kn) dos hospedeiros foi evidenciada. Valores do índice de dispersão e do índice de Green sugerem uma distribuição agregada dos parasitas com um baixo grau de agregação nos hospedeiros. Este é o primeiro relato da ocorrência de A. compactum parasitando um peixe no Lago Catalão.

ABSTRACT

Abstract This report presents a description of natural infection of an adult free-living guira cuckoo with Paratanaisia confusa. Histological and morphological evaluations of renal and parasite samples were performed. The morphological analysis of the parasites revealed spiny tegument, characteristic of P. confusa helminthes. Although macroscopic alterations were absent in the kidneys, the histopathology revealed parasites inside the collecting ducts causing dilatation and destruction of the lining epithelial cells in addition to small focal inflammatory infiltrates in the renal parenchyma. However, as the bird was free-living and naturally infected it was not possible to confirm if all these alterations were directly caused by the parasite presence or if they were related to causes other than the parasitism. Nonetheless, such findings indicate that these trematodes may have pathogenic potential in this host.


Resumo A infecção de um anu-branco, de vida livre, por Paratanaisia confusa é descrita. Avaliações histológicas e morfológicas de amostras renais e dos parasitas foram realizadas. A análise morfológica dos parasitas revelou a presença de tegumento espinhoso, que é característico de P. confusa. Embora alterações renais macroscópicas estivessem ausentes, a histopatologia revelou a presença de parasitas no interior de ductos coletores, provocando dilatação destes e destruição das células epiteliais, além de discretos infiltrados inflamatórios focais no parênquima renal. Entretanto, como a ave era proveniente de vida livre e naturalmente infectada, não foi possível confirmar se todas as alterações observadas foram diretamente provocadas pela presença dos parasitas, ou se estavam relacionadas a outras causas. Todavia, esses achados indicam que os trematódeos dessa espécie possam ter potencial patogênico no hospedeiro estudado.

ABSTRACT

A 46-year-old woman visited our hospital presenting throat pain and globus sensation. The symptoms occurred seven days after eating raw perch and mullet. An endoscopy under sedation showed a fluke―with an approximate length of 4.8 mm and width of 1.5 mm―on the left aryepiglottic fold, with active motility on the mucosa. It was extracted from the larynx using biopsy forceps and was identified as Clinostomum complanatum. To the best of our knowledge, this is the second reported case of human infection with Clinostomum complanatum diagnosed and treated by an endoscopy in Korea. Endoscopy is a useful tool in the diagnosis and treatment of patients at risk for parasitic infections complaining of throat pain.

ABSTRACT

Entre agosto de 2012 y junio de 2013 estudios parasitológicos fueron llevados a cabo en 76 ejemplares de Cyphocharax platanus procedentes del tramo inferior del río Uruguay en la zona de influencia de la represa de Salto Grande. Tres taxones de digeneos fueron identificados: Saccocoelioides spp. (Haploporidae) y Zonocotyle bicaecata (Zonocotylidae) en intestino, y metacercarias de Sphincterodiplostomum musculosum (Diplostomidae) en el interior de los ojos. El 69,7% de los peces analizados resultaron parasitados por al menos un taxón de digeneo. Saccocoelioides spp. mostro los mayores valores de prevalencia, intensidad media y abundancia media (43,4%, 5,45, 2,37 respectivamente) de infección, en relación a Z. bicaecata (28,9%, 1,32 y 0,38 respectivamente) y S. musculosum (13,2%, 2,82 y 0,37 respectivamente). Saccocoelioides spp. y S. musculosum mostraron un patrón de distribución agregado, en tanto que Z. bicaecata presentó una distribución aleatoria en la población de hospedadores. No se hallaron diferencias significativas en los índices de infección de ninguno de los taxones de digeneos en relación al sexo de los hospedadores, y sólo Saccocoelioides spp. presentó una asociación significativa con el tamaño, siendo más frecuente en peces pequeños. Los dos parásitos intestinales (Saccocoelioides spp. y Z. bicaecata) no presentaron una asociación significativa entre sus índices de infección. Los registros de Saccocoelioides spp. y Z. bicaecata corresponden a los primeros para este hospedador en el río Uruguay, y el hallazgo de las metacercarias de S. musculosum constituye una nueva relación parásito-hospedador.


Seventy six specimens of Cyphocharax platanus were collected downstream Salto Grande dam, lower Uruguay River, Uruguay, between August 2012 and June 2013 and examined for digenean parasites. Three digenean taxa were identified: Saccocoelioides spp. (Haploporidae), Zonocotyle bicaecata (Zonocotylidae) (both adult in intestine) and Sphincterodiplostomum musculosum (Diplostomidae) metacercariae inside eyes. We found that 69.7% of examined fish were parasitized by at least one digenean taxon. Saccocoelioides spp. showed highest values of prevalence, mean intensity and mean abundance (43.4%, 5.45, and 2.37, respectively) of infection throughout the study than Z. bicaecata (28.9%, 1.32 and 0.38, respectively) and S. musculosum (13.2%, 2.80 and 0.37, respectively). Saccocoelioides spp. and S. musculosum showed an aggregated distribution pattern, while Z. bicaecata presented a random distribution in the host population. No significant differences in infection indexes of any digenean taxa in relation to host sex were found, and only Saccocoelioides spp. showed a significant association with host size, being more frequent in small fish. The infection indexes of the two intestinal digeneans (Saccocoelioides spp. and Z. bicaecata) were not significantly associated. These are the first records of Saccocoelioides spp. and Z. bicaecata from C. platanus in the Uruguay River, and the finding of S. musculosum metacercariae is a new host-parasite relationship.

ABSTRACT. Studies with molecular markers are currently more common for all groups of living organisms. Molecular techniques used in Platyhelminthes parasites of fishes do not merely reveal complex life cycles, but are important for species distinction and the elucidation of the phylogenetic hypothesis. Current research verified which molecular markers were mainly used phylogenetic studies on Platyhelminthes parasites of fish so that subsidies for further phylogenetic studies in Icthyoparasitology could be provided. Data base of CAPES Journals platform was employed for bibliometric analysis comprising the keywords "fish" and "phylogeny" associated with "Cestoda", "Digenea" or "Monogenea". Information retrieved was quantified and tabulated. Most studies were on Monogenea (43%), followed by Digenea (37%) and Cestoda (18%). Ribosomal molecular markers were the most used in the phylogenetic studies for fish parasites. Due to the advance of molecular biology techniques and of bioinformatics, with more robust phylogenetic analysis, the use of these techniques in other areas such as Ichytioparasitology is on the increase. In fact, molecular phylogenetics and morphological structures analysis have efficiently contributed towards the understanding of phylogenetic relationships among the groups.


Estudos com marcadores moleculares são cada vez mais comuns em todos os grupos de seres vivos. Para os platelmintes parasitos de peixes, as técnicas moleculares possibilitam desvendar ciclos de vida complexos, sendo importantes também na distinção de espécies e na elucidação de hipóteses filogenéticas. Neste sentido, este trabalho teve como objetivo verificar quais são os principais marcadores moleculares utilizados nos estudos de platelmintos parasitos de peixes, visando fornecer subsídios para futuros estudos filogenéticos na Ictioparasitologia. Para a análise bibliométrica foi utilizado o banco de dados dos Periódicos da CAPES, tendo como palavras-chave "fish" e "phylogeny" associadas a "Cestoda", "Digenea" e "Monogenea". As informações obtidas nos trabalhos foram tabuladas e quantificadas. Dos 143 trabalhos obtidos 43% foram com monogenéticos, 37% com digenéticos e 18% com cestoides. Os marcadores moleculares ribossomais foram os mais utilizados nos estudos filogenéticos com estes parasitos de peixes. Com o avanço das técnicas de biologia molecular e da bioinformática, com análises filogenéticas mais robustas, é crescente a utilização destas técnicas na Ictioparasitologia. A filogenética molecular, juntamente com a análise de estruturas morfológicas tem contribuído de maneira mais eficiente para o entendimento das relações de parentesco, entre estes grupos de parasitos de peixes.

A total of 103 specimens of Hoplias intermedius (Günther, 1864) and 86 specimens of H. malabaricus (Bloch, 1794) from the upper São Francisco River, State of Minas Gerais were collected between April 2011 and August 2013, and their parasitic fauna were investigated. Four species of Digenea were found: metacercariae of Austrodiplostomum sp., and Ithyoclinostomum sp.; and adult specimens of Phyllodistomum spatula Odhner, 1902, and Pseudosellacotyla lutzi (Freitas, 1941) Yamaguti, 1954. The prevalence of the metacercariae was higher than that of the adult digeneans of erythrinids from the upper São Francisco River as a result of piscivorous feeding habits of these adult erythrinids. The presence of metacercariae and adult digeneans indicate that they act as intermediate and definitive hosts, respectively, in their biological cycles. Hoplias intermedius is a new host for the four species of Digenea, and the São Francisco River basin is a new location for the known geographical distributions of P. spatula and P. lutzi.


Um total de 103 espécimes de Hoplias intermedius (Günther, 1864) e 86 de H. malabaricus (Bloch, 1794), provenientes do alto Rio São Francisco, Estado de Minas Gerais, foram coletados entre abril de 2011 e agosto de 2013 e tiveram sua fauna parasitária investigada. Quatro espécies de digenéticos foram encontradas: metacercárias de Austrodiplostomum sp. e de Ithyoclinostomum sp.; e espécimes adultos de Phyllodistomum spatula Odhner, 1902 e de Pseudosellacotyla lutzi (Freitas, 1941) Yamaguti, 1954. A prevalência das metacercárias foi mais elevada do que as registradas para os digenéticos adultos dos eritrinídeos do alto Rio São Francisco, resultante da dieta preferencialmente piscívora desses peixes adultos. A presença de metacercárias e de espécimes adultos de digenéticos indicam que os peixes atuam como hospedeiros intermediários e definitivos, respectivamente, nos seus ciclos biológicos. Hoplias intermedius constitui novo hospedeiro para as quatro espécies de Digenea encontradas e a bacia do Rio São Francisco constitui uma nova localidade para a distribuição geográfica conhecida de P. spatula e de P. lutzi.

This study was conducted to investigate the life history, morphology, and maturation of larval stages and adult worms of Fasciola gigantica in experimental mice. Lymnaea auricularia rubiginosa was used as the intermediate host, and Oryza sativa was used for encystment of the metacercariae, while Mus musculus was used as the definitive host for maturation study. Fresh eggs from the gall bladder of water buffaloes fully developed into embryonated ones and hatched out at days 11-12 after incubation at about 29masculineC. Free-swimming miracidia rapidly penetrated into the snail host, and gradually developed into the next larval stages; sporocyst, redia, and daughter redia with cercariae. Fully-developed cercariae were separated from the redia and shed from the snails on day 39 post-infection (PI). Free-swimming cercariae were immediately allowed to adhere to rice plants, and capsules were constructed to protect metacercariae on rice plants. Juvenile worms were detected in intestines of mice at days 3 and 6 PI, but they were found in the bile duct from day 9 PI. Juvenile and adult flukes were recovered from 16 mice experimentally infected with metacercariae, with the average recovery rate of 35.8%. Sexually mature adult flukes were recovered from day 42 PI. It could be confirmed that experimentally encysted metacercariae could infect and develop to maturity in the experimental host. The present study reports for the first time the complete life history of F. gigantica by an experimental study in Thailand. The obtained information can be used as a guide for prevention, elimination, and treatment of F. gigantica at environment and in other hosts.

ABSTRACT

Fifty four specimens of marine fish belonging to seven species collected from the coast of the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil were examined for helminths, and results relating to Monogenea and Digenea are presented. The monogeneans Metamicrocotyla macracantha, Microcotyle pomatomi and Gotocotyla acanthura are reported in new hosts. The digeneans Parahemiurus merus, Lecithochirium microstomum, Gonocercella pacifica, Aponurus laguncula, Gonocerca trematomi and Lampritrema miescheri are reported in new hosts, and the latter two species are also reported for the first time in Brazil.


Cinquenta e quatro espécimens de peixes marinhos pertencentes a sete espécies coletados do litoral do estado do Rio de Janeiro, Brasil foram examinados para helmintos, os resultados referentes a Monogenea e Digenea são apresentados. Os monogenéticos Metamicrocotyla macracantha, Microcotyle pomatomi e Gotocotyla acanthura são apresentados em novos hospedeiros. Os digenéticos Parahemiurus merus, Lecithochirium microstomum, Gonocercella pacifica, Aponurus laguncula, Gonocerca trematomi e Lampritrema miescheri são registrados em novos hospedeiros, as duas últimas espécies são também registradas pela primeira vez no Brasil.

En Colombia se ha registrado la presencia de Paramphistomidae (Trematoda: Digenea) parasitandoel rumen de bovinos de la costa Caribe, los Llanos Orientales y el suroccidente. En estas publicacionesse menciona la presencia y prevalencia de los paramfistómidos, pero todas carecen de la descripciónmorfológica de los digeneos. El hallazgo de paramfistómidos adultos en el rumen de ejemplaresBos taurus, procedentes del sector Llanogrande, en el municipio de Rionegro, Antioquia, motivó lapresente investigación, con el propósito de describir los diferentes estadíos del parásito y establecerel estatus taxonómico específico. Del rumen de una hembra, Bos taurus, sacrificada en la CentralGanadera del municipio de Medellín, se extrajeron vivos 52 digeneos adultos. En el laboratoriose aislaron huevos que se incubaron hasta la obtención de miracidios. Con ellos se infectaron 50moluscos Lymnaea truncatula. La morfología de los adultos y estadíos larvarios del paramfistómidopermitió determinarlo como Cotylophoron cotylophorum. En L. truncatula se obtuvo una infeccióndel 5.1 %. Con este registro se amplia la distribución geográfica y altitudinal del parásito a la regiónaltoandina, noroccidental de Colombia.


The presence of Paramphistomidae parasites (Trematoda: Digenea) inside the rumen (first stomach) hasbeen recorded in Colombia in cattle from the Caribbean coast, the Eastern Plains region in the east, and thesouthwest of the country. However, studies on the presence and prevalence of the parasite do not include anymorphological description. This study includes research findings from adult Paramphistomidae parasitesin the rumen of Bos taurus specimens from Llanogrande in the municipality of Rionegro, Antioquia. Theaim of this research was to describe all the developmental stages of the parasite and to establish its specifictaxonomical status. 52 live adult parasites were found in the rumen of a female Bos taurus sacrificed inthe slaughter house Central Ganadera of Medellin. Eggs from adults were obtained in the laboratory, andhatching was stimulated to obtain miracidia. 50 Lymnaea truncatula snails were exposed to the miracidia,resulting in an infection rate of 5.1 %. The parasite was identified as Cotylophoron cotylophorum byusing adult morphology and larval stages. This finding expands the parasite’s geographical and altitudinaldistribution to the andean highlands in northwestern Colo.


Na Colômbia tem-se encontrado a presencia de Paramphistomidae (Trematoda: Digenea) parasitandono rúmen de bovinos da costa Caribe, os Llanos Orientales e no sul oeste. Nestas publicações tem-semencionado a presencia e prevalência dos paramfistómidos, mas todas carecem da descrição morfológicados digeneos. Do rúmen de uma fêmea Bos taurus proveniente do município de Rionegro e sacrificadana Central Ganadera do município de Medellín, se extraíram vivos 52 digeneos adultos. No laboratórioforam isolados os ovo e forma obtidos os miracidios. Com eles foram infetados 50 moluscos Lymnaeatruncatula. A morfologia dos adultos e estádios larvários do paramfistómido permitiu determinar-lho comoCotylophoron cotylophorum. Em L. truncatula foi obtido uma infecção de 5.1 %. Com este fato, se ampliaa distribuição geográfica e altitudinal do parasita na região alta dos Andes colombianos.

ABSTRACT

Se describen las larvas de digeneos que se obtuvieron en Melanoides tuberculata (Gastropoda: Thiaridae), molusco dulceacuícola del que se colectaron 125 especímenes en el lago del Jardín Botánico Joaquín Antonio Uribe de Medellín. En el laboratorio se individualizaron y se estimuló la emisión cercariana con una fuente luminosa. El 9,6 % de los caracoles emitió cercarias. Los moluscos emisores se sacrificaron para obtener los demás estadios larvarios. Las larvas se montaron al microscopio, se midieron y luego se dibujaron. Los caracteres morfológicos permitieron establecer la presencia de Centrocestus formosanus (Heterophyidae) y de dos Philophthalmidae. Uno de estos es primer registro para Colombia. Se confirma la sensibilidad de M. tuberculata a infecciones por digeneos, así como la especificidad de los filoftálmidos por moluscos hospedadores de la superfamilia Cerithioidea.


The larvae of two trematodes found in the freshwater mollusk Melanoides tuberculata (Gastropoda: Thiaridae) are described. 125 snails from the Medellin’s Botanical Garden Joaquín Antonio Uribe were collected. In the laboratory, each individual was placed alone and stimulated with light in order to have cercaria emission. 9.6% of the snails released cercariae. These were separated in three morphologies. From each one, 15 individuals were measured and drawn. Photographs were taken. Based on their morphological characteritics the presence of Centrocestus formosanus (Heterophyidae) was determined. The other two morphologies were classified in the family Philophthalmidae. One of them constitutes the first register for Colombia. The sensibility of M. tuberculata to infections by digeneans, and the specificity of the family Philophthalmidae to mollusk hosts of the superfamily Cerithioidea are confirmed.

ABSTRACT

The life history of the trematode Pygidiopsis macrostomum Travassos, 1928 is described for the first time. Rediae and cercariae were obtained from naturally infected snails Heleobia australis (d´Orbigny), a new first intermediate host. Metacercariae were found encysted in the mesenteries of three naturally infected guppies, Phalloptychus januarius (Hensel), Jenynsia multidentata (Jenyns) (new host records) and Poecilia vivipara Bloch and Schneider. Experimental infections were successfully completed in the intermediate hosts H. australis and Poe. vivipara reared in the laboratory and hamsters Mesocricetus auratus Waterhouse were utilised as a definitive host.
